I have to admit that one of the reasons I have not been as active in posting to the site is… Skyrim.
I can easily be entranced by such games. I think it is possibly because my whole life is a fetch-quest. But I have been thinking, as I make armor and kill dragons, about the cooking mechanic that is in the game. You can just buy things or eat the raw ingredients, but it is more efficient to have your food cooked before you head out to the next dungeon.
There are a few sites out there that have tried to make the items listed in the cooking menu and… I have to say it was not as appealing as it could have been.
So… While pillaging a dungeon after finishing a quest, I came across a few ingredients.
Three of the components for Cabbage and Apple Stew. I happened to have a pile of salt and set out to find a pot to cook it in.
If you are following along, the next step, according to the game, is to just combine them in the pot.
Nope.
Lets try this again.
Recipe for Apple and Cabbage Stew ala Skyrim
Ingredients:
1 Green Cabbage, washed and finely chopped (you will not use all of a head, so make coleslaw with the extra)
1 medium or two small Onions, finely sliced
2 Red Apples, washed and diced with skin on
1 quart Chicken Stock
oil, butter or bacon fat
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste
Utensils:
Stew pot/large saute pan with lid
knife and cutting board
plate or bowl
heat resistant spatula
Heat: Stovetop medium to medium hot
Time:Prep 10 min, cook 1 hour
In stew pot/large sauté pan, sauté the cabbage in the oil until soft. Pull and put on the plate or bowl.
Add more oil to the pan and sauté the onions until translucent.
Add the apples and cook until the apples start to soften and brown slightly.
Add the cabbage and bring it back up to temperature with the other ingredients.
Add the Chicken stock and bring up to a simmer, where there are bubbles along the edge of the liquid. Cover and turn down slightly.
Cook for about 45 minutes, checking and stirring to keep the vegetables from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Season to taste.
I recommend serving with Italian bread. It looks the most like the bread in the game.
Variations: Make it into a goulash by adding Sour Cream when you serve. Make bacon in the pan and use the fresh bacon fat for the oil and add the cooked bacon back in at the end when you serve. You can make it vegan by using all vegetable oil and stock.
This stew, with the bread, cost about $2.50 per serving.
